Huntington Marshall Thundering Herd

Marshall University has seen its fair share of footballers thrill fans and foes alike with their size over the past 115 years. In that time, the Thunder flock was completely devoid of talent, but that doesn't mean it was 30 long years.

Marshall and the team first came together for a bowl in the 2001 GMAC Bowl - a record 125 points - and Marshall overcame a 30-point deficit to beat East Carolina 64-61 in double overtime. Now Buffalo can make its first appearance in the Camellia Bowl in more than a decade and a half.

The first thing you will hear from Marshall students is that we are just one huge family, and that is probably why. There is no doubt that the Marshall football team will come back and I am proud to be a part of their game and proud of them.

The Thunder's football has always been the emotional core of every corner of West Virginia, attracting players from families that have lived in the state for generations.

Leftwich will also be remembered as the engineer who took the flock to its first ever Bowl Championship Game, the 1976 Bowl Championship Game. Marshall beat East Carolina 32-18, scoring one of the highest scoring points of all time. Junior guard Josh Anderson finished the Marshall team's scoring run by hitting a 1-2 shot at the free throw line to cut the Thundering's lead to 32-18 with 2: 27 left. Payton calmly led the Hisd across the field and set up Willie Merrick for the game - the winner that gave Marshall his first national championship in football. The devastating 1970 plane crash that still haunts Marshall's program led to the deaths of Marshall's head coach and former head coach Jim McElwain and his family.

Feldman also reported that another former Marshall quarterback could be in the running for the Heisman Trophy, Texas A & M star wide receiver Tyler Gaines. Rice saw him a year ago and he can compete with the likes of DeAndre Hopkins, DeShone Kizer, Marcus Mariota and DeSean Jackson.

During his tenure with Marshall, the Thundering Herd won six conference titles, won the 1996 I-AA National Championship, went two unbeaten seasons, won 5-7 bowl games, earned a .500 win percentage or better in three of his four seasons as head coach, and won six conference titles. He tore the careers of quarterbacks Eric Kresser and Chad Pennington, helping them to two national championships and two bowl appearances. When John "Doc" Holiday took the Marshall job in 2010, they attended only one bowl game in his first two seasons and only one in the last three.

The University of Louisville has a 10-5 record against the Thundering Herd and has played them fifteen times. Since re-joining the FBS in 1997, however, they have won 10 of 15 meetings and still hold the record for most bowling wins in school history with nine. They suffered a rare defeat last year that snapped their streak of five consecutive bowl winning seasons. Marshall's biggest rivalry is with Ohio, which leads the all-time series with a 2-1 record and the regular season with two games.
